I'm feeling a little more awake, probably not all the way there yet, but I want to think a little more about the interfaces for representing pitches. Part of the problem is that I've been mingling concerns in my head. There are different ways of thinking about musical pitch, which call for different representations. Let's try to list some ideas before I wind down:
- From one viewpoint, we want to think about the functions of pitches within a scale. This could be represented with numerical scale degree, or with names corresponding to those numbers.
- From another viewpoint, we could simply care about the name of the note. For example, when transcribing sheet music. This interface would perhaps want some idea of accidentals, and almost certainly some form of transposition to account for transposing instruments.
- Perhaps above these in some way, there could be specifications of chord roots and quality without nailing down the exact realization.
- And also the question of, are we doing 12edo, or some kind of infinite isomorphic keyboard kind of thing, or a selection of just intonation or well-tempered notes, or some other equal division, or perhaps some other system entirely?
To make any progress on this, I need to sketch stuff out. And perhaps a bit of "This is the interface I want it to have." Maybe I'll find the time and motivation tomorrow, or the day after that. For now, I want to get off my laptop.
Good night.
