Does this suck because I'm inexperienced, or is there some actual avenue of improvement? Since I can't come up with a better suggestion, I'm going to assume it's the former.

I have no idea whether the type signatures I'm writing are remotely reasonable.
I used a lot of words trying to explain this, but I'm not sure whether I explained anything.
Figuring out what I'm supposed to do when other stuff doesn't do what it's supposed to do.
Well, it's not obviously broken at this point. Kind of worried about the non-obvious breakage, then...
"Oh, hey, because I defined a function instead of a loop, I can just... call the function again. Cool."
Apparently I can write... whatever the hell this is... in any language.
Let's see what strange ways this decision comes around to bite me.
